I have four children of my own; two expected home births, one unexpected hospital birth and one very surprising unassisted childbirth. All of them were born naturally. It wasn't until a few years ago, however, when birth became a passion for me. I had been called unexpectedly to attend a family member's labor. It was my first time witnessing the awesome power of birth. I vividly remember driving east, heading home after the birth as the sun came over the horizon. I was filled with the majesty of new life on a new day. I knew then that I wanted to support women in birth.
I love everything about birth. I believe that a woman's body was uniquely created by God to conceive, carry and birth babies. Childbirth changes a woman emotionally, physically and psychologically. It can be the most life changing, empowering experience and can alter the way a woman thinks and feels about herself and her life. I believe that childbirth is a natural event and not something that needs to be medically managed.
Every woman needs and deserves to be empowered, encouraged and supported during pregnancy and labor. I am a Certified Doula with Childbirth International. I am forever amazed at the power of women in childbirth and am so blessed everytime I am allowed to work with a couple in labor. I am passionate about the difference having a doula can make and my hope is that more and more women will discover it for themselves.
I also firmly agree with Diana Korte and Roberta Scaer in A Good Birth, A Safe Birth "If you don't know your options, you don't have any." It is my desire that every woman would have the information she needs to make informed decisions. I do not believe that there is any one perfect way to birth, but rather that each woman can find the perfect birth for her and her baby. I am currently in training to be a Childbirth Educator. I love every occasion I have to teach a couple and show them something they may not have known before and to open up options they may not have realized existed.
I believe that when mothers and fathers are encouraged and empowered to reach for the birth they want, it results in stronger relationships, healthier babies and happier families.
